Thank you so much Natasha for taking time out of your holiday to visit and for all the copies of your books you have donated to us. I know you said it was a win win as you can now tick it off your 'Bucket list' and it was so nice to hear that you felt Barton Rural had the same safe, happy feel you remember from your Fairview days. Hopefully your visit has helped plant a seed in at least one of our students and who knows in years to come they may return to Barton as a ex student turned author. Author Visit - Natasha Hanson
Today we were lucky to have a visit from a past Fairview School student turned children's book author Natasha Hanson. Natasha now lives in Minnesota with her husband and son and is back in Timaru visiting family. Author visits are such an invaluable way to inspire our tamariki, even more so when the author has a connection with our own school. Natasha spoke fondly of her time at Fairview School and attributed a lot of her inspiration for her books to her happy school memories. Points that resonated strongly from her talk were both the importance of reading to become a better writer and the fact that as New Zealander's we take our own backyard for granted. That we should know our characters inside out, if they suddenly walked through the door we would know every physical and emotional characteristic. One of the best qualities we could give to a character is 'Heart', which fits so well with our Barton HEART values. Natasha was blown away by our KIWI Centre, she told me that during her time at Fairview there was only a small Library in what is now the HUB.
